I worked as a print journalist for 17 years before coming to Pitt to pursue a Ph.D. in Fall, 2017. I had previously attended the CUNY Graduate Center from 2015- 2017 and Penn State, where I received a BA degree in African and African American Studies in 1994. I see myself as an evolving scholar on the history of the African diaspora, with a particular focus on Latin American history. I am particularly interested in studying the Garifuna of Central America and examining issues relating to migration and racial/ identity formation. My research interests include nation-formation, race and ethnicity, and the African Diaspora and the roles music and religion play in the formation of identity.
