I am a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pitt teaching German, East European and Russian History. Last fall, I started to develop my own digital spatial history project. I use QGIS and ArcGIS to map industries and factories in Riga/Latvia around 1900. The overall aim is to visualize Riga's industrial and economic development to explain how Riga became the port with the highest sales volume in the Russian Empire. Once I have collected further data, I also want to map the commodities that the Riga port imported and exported.
